Traveling in a camper of any kind can bring stress to anyone. You are afraid you might have missed something, or you think “what if something breaks?” Well, we are here to tell you that all those nightmares can and will come true, at some point.
Now that we have scared you, let us explain ourselves and the silver lining of those stress balls. We have been traveling in our Open Range 5th wheel for almost three years and we are about to hit our 100th campground, so yeah, we move A LOT. With that comes the stresses as stated above. Things have broken and we have defiantly missed items before we pull away BUT don’t let that scare you away from traveling around with your family and getting all the positive things you will get out of that. There is WAY more positive than negative things while traveling and moving around a lot.
1. You “get” to mess up together, as a family
2. You learn a lot about yourselves and what your strengths and weaknesses are while roaming around
3. You learn your RV and like us, learn to just roll with it and fix anything that happens
4. You get to go on epic adventures TOGETHER
When we first started this full-time RV life, we had a checklist. We watched all the YouTube videos that we could and tried to take all that in but, if we are being honest, simply doing it has proven to be the best learning. We were those people that had a clipboard in our hands on travel days with other people looking at us like we were crazy, but we thought, oh well, we need to make sure everything is PERFECT and yes, you need to make sure that you have done everything correctly before you pull away or pull your slides in. Do not be afraid to do things your way and don’t worry about what others are thinking because they have either already messed something up or will.
Travel days do not have to be stressful but, if you camp, you know they can be. We have two small kids and let us tell you, that alone makes it stressful. They seem to always get something out after you put it back. They will just leave it after you thought it was taken off and then next thing you know you have a Lego piece on the floor as your pulling that slide in and BAM, problem. With us, we have learned how to manage this, and our kids have adapted to our style of prepping for a travel day, and they even help now. That takes time and tons of patience but once you get it you can see the growth of not only your kids but yourselves as well.
Long story short, there will always be issues and stress balls while pulling or driving an RV down the road. You are pulling a “house on wheels” at 70MPH on bumpy roads and tight turns. Our advice, take your time and roll with it. Enjoy the ride and the quality time you are spending with your family. One day you will look back at all the good times and not even talk about the bad.
